1. WHAT IS A VERB?

Why are verbs taught first?
Verbs are powerful words. They get things moving! Without the verb, nothing would be happening. That’s why every sentence must have a verb.

Definition:
A verb is a word that shows action or being

Quick fact:
The subject is t he person or thing doing the action. It can be a noun or a pronoun

Example:
1) The kangaroo hopped over the fence.
2) Lauren feeds her turtle every day.
3) You run too fast!

Hopped, feeds, and run are verbs. As you can see, they provide the action.

Verbs can paint a colorful picture or make a story more interesting and exciting. It’s fun to think of unusual verbs to use. Here are some examples:

jump: leap, bounce, hop, spring, skip
laugh: chuckle, giggle, titter, snicker, howl
look: peek, stare, glare, glance, gaze

Ex.: Try these
Think of more colorful verbs for each of these words:
walk
eat
pull
shout
get
push

2. MY FUN WITH WORDS (to expand your child’s vocabulary)

Address:
The number of the house or apartment you live in and the name of your street are your address. Always remember you address in case your parents get lost in the park.

Aunt:
A real aunt is a sister of your mother or father. Aunts are nice to have. They give presents on your birthday, and they seldom scold you.

Active:
Somebody who is busy and moving is active. A cat running away from a dog is active. A father snoring on a couch is not active.

3 A SHORT READING: THE GOOSE THAT LAID THE GOLDEN EGGS
A man and his wife had the good fortune to possess a Goose which laid a golden egg every day. Lucky though they were, they soon began to think they were not getting rich fast enough, and imagining the bird must be made of gold inside, they decide to kill it in order to secure the whole store of precious metal at once. But when they cut it open they found it was just like any other goose. Thus, they neither got rich all at once, as they had hoped, nor enjoyed any longer the daily addition to their wealth.

4. A GREAT QUESTION: WHY DO YOU WAKE UP?
It’s the weekend and you don’t need to get up early. So why do you wake up on a sleep-in Saturday the same time you wake up on school days? Your internal “alarm clock” tells you it’s time to wake up. But what sets your “alarm clock” to go off? Sunlight does. If you lived totally in the dark your internal clock would run slower and slower until you ended up sleeping and waking at very odd times. But sunlight resets your clock every day, so you operate on a more-or-less 24 hour schedule – just like the planet you live on.
