A group of people stroll through Ottawa's Chinatown during the FestivAsia celebration of Asian culture last September. (Somerset Street Chinatown BIA)Businesses in Ottawa's Chinatown are getting ready for an influx of Chinese tourists after the country said Thursday it will make Canada a preferred travel destination.

Approved destination status will make it easier for Chinese visitors to get to Canada on tourist visas, and allow Canada to advertise and promote the country in China.

Grace Xin, executive director of the Somerset Street Chinatown Business Improvement Area, said capital cities play an important role in Chinese culture.

She said businesses in Chinatown are working hard to ensure they can keep up with any increase in tourism, and she said the local BIA is working with the city to make improvements in the area.

A magnificent gateway built by the City of Beijing, the City of Ottawa and the Chinatown BIA will be constructed by April of next year,” Xin said.

'A real opportunity'

Noel Buckley, president and chief executive of Ottawa Tourism, said Ottawa is the third most popular destination for Chinese visitors after Vancouver and Toronto.

Buckley said Tourism Ottawa has been looking at ways to increase the number of Chinese visitors to Canada’s capital city for more than five years.

"Now that we are actually able to more actively promote and work with outbound tour operators from China, and support their activities and market in China, we think we have a real opportunity here,” Buckley said.

A recent Conference Board of Canada survey said approved destination status is expected to boost the yearly rate of travel to Canada from China by up to 50 per cent by 2015.

According to the Prime Minister's Office, almost 166,000 people from China visited Canada last year. They spent more money in Canada than visitors from any other country.

It is a joke!
