October 13, 2010 will mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and China. In December 2009 Prime Minister Harper made a visit to China which promises to revitalise bilateral ties. Mr. Calvert will speak about the visit and will focus on what it will mean
in terms of further developing the Canada-China relationship.
Philip Calvert joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) in the early 1980s, after obtaining an M.A. in History at York University. He was posted as Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Embassy in China from 1984 to 1987. Afterwards, Mr. Calvert took a leave of absence to continue studying, and obtained a Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1991. Back in DFAIT he held a number of important positions including Senior APEC Working Group Coordinator and Departmental Assistant to Raymond Chan, then Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific. From 1994-97, he was posted to China for a second time as Economic Counsellor and Media Spokesman. On his return to headquarters, he was again involved with China as Deputy Chief Negotiator for Canada on China’s Accession to the World Trade Organization. Mr. Calvert was assigned for the third time to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing as Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission from 2004-2008. He is currently Director General, North Asia Bureau at DFAIT.
Mr. Calvert was closely involved with the recent visit by the Prime Minister and he accompanied Mr. Harper to China.
