Deadly Manitoba crash leaves 12 children orphans
WINNIPEG - Twelve children from Kleefeld, Man., were left orphaned when both their parents were killed in a car crash southeast of Winnipeg Saturday morning.
David Dik, 38, and his 35-year-old wife, Elisabeth, were traveling east on Highway 52 in their Honda Civic when it smashed into a westbound Chevrolet Trailblazer just before noon, Steinbach RCMP said.
Jakob Dik, 16, the couple’s oldest child, was quiet and stunned Saturday night. "We’re not the best right now," he said.
He said he learned of his parents’ deaths when police picked him up from his job at a local dairy farm.
"I was shocked," he said.
Jakob said he and his uncle — also named Jakob — now face the task of looking after his eleven siblings. The youngest is just a year old, he said.
The Diks immigrated from Germany seven years ago. David worked at a chicken farm in the Kleefeld area, while Elisabeth stayed at home, their son said.
"They were excellent. Super-nice people," said Charlie Isaac, a former neighbour who helped the family settle in the area. "I remember one spring they had a bit of flooding at their place, and we did a bit of sandbagging for them."
RCMP blamed the crash on poor road conditions. Speed and alcohol were not a factor, but the couple were not wearing seat belts, RCMP said.
Both occupants of the Chevrolet Trailblazer sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.
The winter storm blowing through southern Manitoba was also blamed for the death of a 39-year-old Portage la Prairie man, who wrapped his snowmobile around a tree early Saturday morning.
Portage la Prairie RCMP say they were called to an area near Angle Road, just south of Portage la Prairie, shortly after 3 a.m. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said.
Heavy and drifting snow are believed to be factors in the crash, RCMP said. Man’s name has not been released pending the notification of his family.
