Toyota's massive recalls over problem gas pedals in the US are being extended to China and Europe, the latest blow to the world's top automaker as it struggles to salvage its safety reputation.

The announcements come after the company earlier this week said it was suspending US sales and production of eight models, including the Camry, America's top-selling car, to fix faulty pedals that could stick and cause acceleration without warning.

Toyota Motor Corp also announced an additional recall of 1.09 million vehicles in the United States covering five models, the 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix, and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

Toyota dealers across the US have been swamped with calls from concerned drivers but had few answers as the recalls snowballed.

A week before the sales suspension, Toyota issued a US recall for the same eight models, affecting 2.3 million vehicles. In late 2009 it recalled 4.2 million vehicles amid concerns that floor mats could bend across gas pedals, causing sudden acceleration.

Toyota has insisted the problem of sudden, uncontrolled acceleration was "rare and infrequent" and said dealers should deal with customers "on a case-by-case basis". But drivers of Toyotas and those who share the use the parts involved in the latest US recall.

"Toyota is making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible," its European arm said.

The sales suspension in the US, Toyota's biggest market, could endanger the company's fledgling earnings recovery. Toyota only returned to the black for the July-September quarter with net income of 21.8 billion yen ($241 million) after three straight losing quarters.

Investors continued to dump shares in the global auto giant yesterday. Toyota dropped 3.9 percent to 3,560 yen even as the benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average gained 1.6 percent to close at 10,414.29. Toyota tumbled 4.3 percent on Wednesday.

"It is still uncertain how this recall problem will affect Toyota's profits. But investors are worried it could really pressure the company's overall earnings," said Masatoshi Sato, market analyst at Mizuho Investors Securiti stuck in floor mats.

Toyota said it will fix or replace the accelerator pedals for the recalled vehicles to avoid the risk of floor mat entrapment. The company said it will replace floor mats as well for the latest recalled vehicles.

In March of 2007, Toyota started getting reports of gas pedals being slow to rise after being depressed for acceleration. Engineers fixed the problem in the Tundra pickup early in 2008.

But troubles persisted in other models, eventually leading to last week's US recall and the plans to suspend sales and shut down of six factories while Toyota tries to fix the problems.

Analysts said the financial damage to Toyota from the recalls would depend on how long it has to shut production on key models and how badly consumer confidence is shaken as reflected in pricing of both new and used cars.

"The sales and production suspension could cost Toyota at least 50 billion yen ($553 million) in operating profit per month," said Koji Endo, auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan.

Battered by a plunge in global sales brought on by the financial crisis, Toyota had been expected to post an operating loss of around 47 billion yen in the year to March 2010, before rebounding to a 599 billion yen profit in 2011, according to 19 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

"I am expecting 100 billion to 200 billion yen in operating profit this year, but it could end up in zero or a operating loss due to this sales and production suspension," Endo said.

Here is a list of recent recalls issued by Toyota Motor Corp. and the vehicles involved.

Sept. 30, 2009: Toyota warns owners to remove floor mats from their vehicles because of the potential for them to trap the accelerator, causing sudden acceleration.

Oct. 5: Toyota recalls 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles in the U.S. because floor mats could trap the gas pedal. It's Toyota's largest U.S. recall. Models involved are the 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 IS250/IS350.

Nov. 24: Toyota recalls 110,000 Tundra trucks from the 2000-2003 model years because excessive corrosion could cause the spare tire to come loose.

Nov. 25: Toyota announces a plan to fix the floor-mat problem by shortening the accelerators so they won't get stuck against the floor mat. It also expands the number of vehicles involved to a total of 4.2 million.
Jan. 21, 2010: Toyota recalls 2.3 million Toyota vehicles in the U.S. because the accelerator pedal can stick, causing unintended acceleration. It is not related to the floor mat recall, although about 1.7 million of the vehicles are also involved in both recalls. Models involved are the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, certain 2007-2010 Camrys, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia.

Jan. 26: Toyota temporarily suspends U.S. sales of the eight models whose accelerator pedals can stick.

Jan. 27: Toyota adds 1.09 million models to the floor mat recall. Models involved are the 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Venza, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe.

Jan. 28: Toyota recalls 75,500 vehicles in China for the same acceleration pedal problem as the U.S. recall. Toyota RAV-4 SUVs made between March 2009 and January 2010 are affected.

Jan. 28: Toyota says it will recall vehicles in Europe because of the accelerator problem, but says it doesn't yet know how many.

Jan. 28: Ford Motor Co. halts production of the Transit Classic van in China because it contains gas pedals built by the same company that built Toyota's. Ford began production of the Transit Classic in December and had built 1,600 vans.

Expect more Toyota recalls: safety firm

A U.S.-based safety research firm says Toyota's problems of unintended acceleration have more than one cause and until the automaker starts looking in the right place, people can expect future recalls involving more models.

"Toyota would have us believe this was all floor mats, at least as of a couple of months ago. They've now changed their position, saying it's floor mats and accelerator pedals. But the reality is there's more to it. There are incidents that cannot be explained by either one of those mechanical interfaces," said Sean Kane, president of Safety Research and Strategies, Inc., based in Massachusetts.

Kane said his agency has documented 18 deaths due to unintended acceleration in certain Toyota models since 1999, as well as 2,274 incidents resulting in 275 crashes.

"I'm fairly confident that's an undercount because before much of the publicity, there wasn't the kind of investigation and evaluation of sudden unintended acceleration post-crash," Kane said in an interview with CBC Radio's As It Happens on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Toyota announced it would suspend sales and production of eight Toyota models because of sticking accelerator pedals. Last week, Toyota issued a recall for the same models, affecting 2.3 million vehicles in Canada and the U.S.

On Thursday, Toyota announced an additional recall of 1.09 million vehicles in the United States covering five models: 2008-10 Highlander, 2009-10 Corolla, 2009-10 Venza, 2009-10 Matrix and 2009-10 Pontiac Vibe.

It has also extended the recall to vehicles in Europe and China. Ford Motor Co. has also announced it has halted production of some full-sized commercial vehicles in China because they contain gas pedals built by the same company that made the accelerators in Toyota's recall.
For Kane, this recall is just the beginning of many more.

"We're not seeing one thing that's the root cause. I think floor mats are certainly a cause and it's entirely possible that pedals are a cause, but certainly many of the incidents we've examined have all the tell-tales of electronic-related defects, and those can come in many forms," said Kane.

According to Kane, Toyota has known about electronic problems affecting acceleration for several years.

"In the past, Toyota has actually done technical bulletins to reflash the algorithms in their control units to prevent unintended acceleration incidents," he said.

Reflashing is a process that involves reconfiguring the computer control chip.

For instance, regarding the 2002 and 2003 Camry, one of the recalled models, Toyota issued a bulletin to dealers, advising them that if consumers reported complaints of unintended acceleration while travelling between 38 and 42 miles per hour that they should "reflash" the computer with a prescribed algorithm to fix the problem.
Toyotas has not made any recalls over electronics. Both recalls involve accelerator pedals and floor mats.

"I think what we're going to see, unfortunately, is there's going to be additional recalls that will cover other models and it's going to unwind over time. The company is now saying it's examining other issues. They can't keep this up for much longer without really losing some significant trust in what they're doing," said Kane.

"The credibility of this company is really going out the window very, very quickly. Consumers have been told one thing — it's floor mats. Now they're shifting, now we're onto accelerator pedals and even that's shifting."

Honda Recalls 646,000 Cars for Fire Hazard

It hasn't been a great week for Japanese automakers.

Fresh on the heels of Toyota temporarily halting sales of eight models over concerns about accelerator pedals sticking, Honda announced Friday a voluntary recall of 646,000 cars worldwide to examine window swtiches that can melt or catch fire when exposed to an extreme amount of liquid.

The only model affected by Honda's action is the 2007-2008 Fit subcompact, 141,140 of which have been sold in the United States.
The problem stems from a master power window switch on the driver's side that needs to be replaced or retrofitted with a waterproof skirt. There have been seven reported cases of the part melting in the U.S., two involving fire. A Honda spokesperson tells Foxnews.com that no injuries have been linked to the defect at this time.

Honda's action comes in the wake of Toyota's recall of over 4.2 million vehicles worldwide stemming from a faulty accelerator pedal assembly that could become stuck and cause unintended acceleration.

That recall affects certain 2009-2010 RAV4s, certain 2009-2010 Corollas, 2009-2010 Matrixes, 2005-2010 Avalons, certain 2007-2010 Camrys, certain 2010 Highlanders, 2007-2010 Tundras and 2008-2010 Sequoias.

Toyota has come under extreme public scrutiny for its handling of the situation, as it initially continued manufacturing and selling affected models even after the recall was announced. Then on Tuesday, Toyota halted the production and sale of eight models in North America, including the popular Camry and Corolla, while redesigned parts are produced and distributed to factories and dealers. To date,Toyota says that no accidents have been linked to the problem.

A House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on the matter has been scheduled for February 4th entitled "Toyota Gas Pedals: Is the Public at Risk?" A Feb. 25 hearing by the House Energy and Commerce Committee has also been scheduled.
