I think that buying house is same like somewhere else and it is realy depend on what you really want. If you want to save the time on commute. Alymer is better than Barrhaven. It only takes about 15 minutes to center town from Rivermead community. There are lot of new communities in Alymer and majority of people come from Ottawa. The property tax is little higher than Ottawa but it includes water bill you will pay annual. Income tax is hard to compare.The house in Alymer is much cheaper than Ottawa 6 years ago and right now it is still cheaper than Ottawa at least $50,000 to 90,000. The reason is Quebec want to seperate from Canada 20 years ago and this result property value are cheaper than rest of major cities. but It start to grew up recently and many people move in now.

If you 'd like to have a big lot, Aylmer is definately better. There are lots of green space and it is a lot easier to get one closer to downtown ottawa for a decent price.
Also if you like outdoors, Aylmer has easy access to gatineau park, bike path, hiking trails, and lots of golf course.

I moved from Aylmer back to Ottawa last year.
Comparing to Ottawa, houses in Aylmer:
-bigger lot
-lower price (50k+ on townhouse, more on single)
-higher property tax rate (but water is included)
-higher income tax rate (biggest factor playing here, I believe)
-better benefit (7$/day daycare, better health insurance, higher EI...)
-closer to downtown, 5 min to bridge, 10-15 min to downtown (but pretty bad during rush hour because everyone on the same road)
-cheaper grocery (superC...)
If you keep track of housing price, Quebec housing price keeps increasing even in 2008. Currently the difference between ottawa and Gatineau is not as big as before in terms of housing price. I wouldn't recommand high income family or young professionals to settle down in Aylmer.
