Thanks for your time.

Here is her introduction.
Hi,

For a French writing competition, Masta Da Costa, organized by Citizeship and Immigration Canada, I entered an essay "Les heros inconnus".

The topic for this competition is about a hero that has influenced Canada's growth. My compostition talks about Chinese immigrants that came to Canada to build the Canadian Pacific Railway and how they were mistreated. Even under those circumstances, they strived to the best of their abilities. The Canadian Pacific Railway has united the whole Canada, from east to west, an important event in the Canadian history. The Chinese workers were the largest part of the work force then, but they were not recoganized and honoured in the Canadian history.

With this composition, I want everyone to realize the great contribution and sacrifice of the Chinese workers and their contribution in building Canada. To me, Chinese Railroad Workers were the unknown heros that has changed Canada's history.

My essay has been selected as winner for this group. The vote is for the public choice award.

If you would like to vote for me, please follow the instructions below. The process will only take at most 2 minutes. your vote is appricated ^-^

Unknown Heroes
A bright yellow line was in the horizon when I came out of the small tent. It was a clear morning. A cold breeze hit me. The climate in Canadawas so different than that of China. Homesickness filled me. It had been such a long time since I was home. The memories of the past weeks slowly unfolded in front of my eyes - the departure from China, the last farewells to my family, and the scent of the ocean on the dirty boat which had brought hundreds of determined men to this land called Canada. It was a new start, another chance for a better life. Canada was this promise. The memory changed and now it was that of arriving at the work site, deep in the mountains of British Colombia, at a place called Port Moody. An atmosphere of anxiety hung in the air.
The memories faded as I started to walk to the work site. In the distance, the rising sun revealed the small houses of wood, where the “superior” workers lived in. A wave of jealousy started to rise within me. It wasn’t fair that they could earn 2$ per hour and live in wood houses. We could only earn 1$ an hour and live in tents that were as useful as leaves in the wind. We also had to pay for this “house” and for our food. I knew that how we were treated was not right but we couldn’t argue. After all, it was our decision to come here. Again, a cold breeze made me shiver.
A sense of danger filled me when I saw the site. It was a dangerous job but the thought of my family made me stay. After earning more money, I could immigrate my family here and we would start a new and better life. I saw that there was already workers starting their work, mostly Chinese. There was more news, yesterday 2 Chinese workers were killed in explosions. Another breeze blew and this made the men tighten their ripped, dirty shirts. They grabbed their pickaxes and shovels and started to work, in assigned groups.
The sun slowly raised, and the morning turned to afternoon. The cold breeze continued but now it was a refreshment for the men who worked in the mountains. The sun was high in the sky when another group came to replace us. I sat on a big rock with the others of my group. While drinking the tea that one of the men had prepared, my sight was captivated by the sky, then by the other workers. My eyes stopped at one worker, a boy with a dirty determined face that couldn’t been more than 12 years old. He looked almost like my son. A new determination settled into my mind. It was going to be a bit more time until my family could be united, this time in a better life. A few more minutes passed and we started back to work.
The sun slowly sank down, and the afternoon turned into night. We had advanced by another 8 meters, a huge accomplishment. We were preparing to end our day when suddenly our chief turned around and asked me if I wanted to earn some fast money. Seeing that this was my chance, I accepted. He gave me an explosive and told me to explode it in tunnel. A cold wind blew and the sudden change in temperature hit me. I entered the cavern but something was wrong. Everything turned black. Before everything was turned upside down, I heard in the distance, a boy calling “dad”.
3 years later, in 1885, the railroad was complete. The Chinese workers were not invited to the ceremony at Craigellachie where the last piece of the Canadian Pacific Railway was placed. It was an action that united Canada, from east to west. The Chinese workers were rejected in the hostile society. A small part of the workers had enough money to return to China but a lot stayed, including a boy of 15 years old. He stayed to continue the goal of his father; that one day he would be able to immigrate his family to Canada for a better life. A cold breeze hit him and at that moment, he realized that heroes are not necessarily known or respected; real heroes are those of the unknown.
