Frankly explain this to your boss you have 2 interviews. Tell him exactly why you want to try the other one and let him know in a very low profile or indirect way this is a higher position. Let him know you show your respect by letting him know about this and ask him for advice if there is any problem you try both interviews, will it jeopardize the other position and etc.
Remember sincere communication is the key here.
If he is not a narrow-minded person(almost all are not), he would also agree you should try the first one as well, gain more experience. In this way, you gain his support for you to try both, there will be no surprise to him if he finds out latter you are also applying for another job and also he knows that he may need to give you a firm offer earlier if he really wants to keep you. This can only be good for you:), why worry?

You can turn this little headache into your advantage. You should be happy to face this situation, it'll actually increase your chance :-)

Thank you very much sharinglight123.

The first position is the one my boss is building for me.
The second position is the one I will have an interview.

I will go for the interview (it is very hard to pass the interview as I know). If the interviewer doesn’t ask my current job and situation, I think he don’t know my boss. In this case, do you think I still should talk with my boss?

Thank you very much again.

My suggestion is you should. What if he asks during your interview?
I think it is very likely your current boss will know anyway after the interview.
So, to have peace of mind why not tell your boss in the way I said earlier.
Be tactful and sincere, magic will happen:-)
I have feeling you will get at least one offer, may be both!

Good luck!

不做后悔的事情。具体实施看具体情况

Tell your current boss that you have an interview for a different position, and ask his/her opinion about your interview. Even your interview is successful, a reference is usually needed. Your current boss can be a good reference. Tell the truth to your current boss. This won't have any negative effect on your current job.

Thanks to all folks.
I will go for the interview. After interview, I will make decision if I should talk with my boss.

Of course you should go. Everybody is playing the same game. If your current boss knows that you are getting interview for a higher position, he might even give you an acting on a higher grade in order to keep you. Think about it - what will your boss do if he/she is in the same situation?

Just feel very sorry to my boss. Because he have done a lot of things for keeping me. And I have promised him that I will not go anywhere.

You sound like you already got the job. Is that really the case?
I think your boss will know about it very soon as the other person will sure contact your boss and ask about you. That's the best way for them to get the information. In government especially in the same department, manager or supervisor generally knows other managers or supervisors. Good luck.

Thanks to all folks.

sharinglight123 gave you very good suggestions. You'd better talk with your boss before the interview, not after. It will make a big difference.
I understand your dilemma because we all have the Chinese professional culture. However, here is different. Especially in the government, no one can stop you from promotions.
Talk with you boss right now, openly and without feeling guilty. Try to make a point that this is a good learning experience for you, and that is the main reason you want to go to the interview. From what you said, your boss is quite a kind person. He/She knows you may not get that position right away even you pass the interview.
Good luck!

You'd better talk to your current boss before the interview. I don't think she/he would stand on your way. It is reasonable for everyone. Shouldn't worry about it.

realistically speaking, no employers expect someone would work for them forever, and as employee, you don't expect yourself stay at one place for the rest of your life. But how to communicate w/ your current employer is another story, you have to play some tricks to it before getting the job. In your case, because your boss is nice and try very effort to keep you, you should tell him about the interview. you can say something like you see an opportunity that you think it best suits your interest and experience, you don' t want to miss it and you want to give it a try. If he's as nice as you decribed, it won't be embarrassing even if you didn't get the job.
