Leave it w/o backsplash if you decided do it yourself. That's what I did w/ my house. It's lot easier to put tiles on an empty wall than have the tiles removed then putting new tiles on. Think about it, the glue used on the tiles are quite strong, even using special tool to take the tiles off the wall, it still quite a bit of work.
真的没这么做的,要换的话都是全部去掉，刮干净了，再上新的，而且backsplash后头应该用的不是glue......anyone8chatroom

wow, stick new one on old one, sounds like contractor cheating on the customer 
, then what if few years later, you or new owner does not like it, going to stick third layer on that? , where is the space for counter top 
??? sorry being mean, if you do not like to hear it. good contractor would never ever stick new one on old one, that is why some people want to watch what contractor do, contractor sometime say beautifully to you, "oh, yes, I will rip off everything and make surface smooth before put new one on", you said ok, thanks, then what he did? new one on top of old one and if you found out, he will tell you this is ok, very strong."" 
i see one person's house has 5 layers' treasure on the floor and caused top layer crack, not able to walk on that, then he have to redo, guess what? one contractor estimate him about 4 to 6k just to take all layers off ...that was a real "PIA"
