The launch of Al-Jazeera TV in 1997 raised the profile of Qatari television internationally. The station has gained a reputation for being extremely outspoken on issues traditionally deemed as very sensitive in the Arab world although it is careful not to criticise Qatar itself and some of its close Gulf allies, specifically Saudi Arabia.
Al-Jazeera, already popular in the Arab world, became known worldwide after becoming the only TV channel allowed to operate from Afghanistan and the first to air recorded statements by Osama Bin Laden following the beginning of US strikes against Afghanistan on 7 October 2001.
The government formally lifted censorship of the media in 1995 and since then the press has been essentially free from government interference. )
