Carleton student stung for peddling transit pass
Carleton student stung for peddling transit pass
Ottawa transit officials slapped a $610 fine on a Carleton University student they say was trying to sell her bus pass online.
OC Transpo officials said the fine was laid after a sting operation caught the female student selling her U-Pass — a specialized pass students receive as part of their tuition — on Kijiji.com, a popular online marketplace.
"It's going to send a very strict message out there," said Kim Weston-Martin, the manager of OC Transpo's law enforcement unit.
"There are conditions of use of the pass, and further there are provisions in our transit bylaw that speak to being an authorized vendor to sell these."
Weston-Martin said OC Transpo has also been working with student associations to raise awareness of the punishments students face if they try to peddle their passes.
The U-Pass, which launched in January, costs $290 and is rolled into the tuition of every full-time student at Carleton and the University of Ottawa — whether they take the bus or not.
A regular year-long OC Transpo pass costs more than $900, leaving an opportunity for some students who to turn a illegitimate profit on their U-Pass.
OC Transpo is currently surveying students to see if more students have been riding the bus since the U-Pass was introduced. The results of that study are expected in January.
