Huawei made the announcement after a meeting with Premier Dalton McGuinty in Shanghai on his mission to China. Huawei will receive a $6.5-million grant from the province.
"Huawei's investment is great news for the city of Ottawa and the people of Ontario. It's an endorsement of Ontario's high-skilled workers and innovative researchers, and demonstrates the importance of our continued efforts to work together to create jobs and build prosperity," said McGuinty.
"Ottawa has long been a nurturing ground for some of the world's brightest minds in telecommunications," said Charles Ding, president of Huawei North America.
"This latest investment, supported by the Ontario government, will help Huawei strengthen its North American R&D capabilities and
drive technology innovation and the growth of Canada's telecommunications industry ... "
Huawei officially unveiled its Kanata labs in the spring, pledging to spend at least $50 million on research and development.
It has been hiring talent left behind by Nortel Networks' demise, and as of April, had more than 70 employees.
Later, the company strengthened ties with the city by taking membership in tech incubator Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation, which some suggested was done in part to establish a beachhead with for entry into the United States. The company has faced stiff opposition from some U.S. politicians about doing research there.
Huawei's immediate interest in Canada stems from contracts with BCE Inc.'s Bell Canada, Telus Corp. and SaskTel.
