Heartrending: Bile Taken- Mother Bear Kills Baby in Tears
I was trusted by a friend to take care of his "Bear Village" for a few days, which is located in a secluded villa, a mountain retreat northwest of the city, and his bear farm as well.
That night, in the hours just before dawn, it was difficult to fall asleep soundly in the small building. The mountain breeze carried waves of terrific yelling, like the sound of weeping with grief, pain, and despair.
Precisely at that time, I vaguely heard the gentle sound on the door, "creak, creak", accompanied by heavy breathing. I abruptly turned over and sat up, and turned on the light. "Who is this?" There was no answer. The Silence was terrifying. I stretched out and grabbed a broom, and slowly reached for the door. The door suddenly opened. There, outside the door was a crouching baby bear, his chubby body huddled up, shaggy hair on his temples gave him a fluffy appearance. He was frightened, staring at me and uttering an almost painful mumbled cry. "Little bear, come, come here," I opened my hands. The bear toddled towards me and put his small palms on my body, licking my hands with his warm tongue extremely tenderly.
Suddenly, a noise came from outside. The cub’s eyes were filled with trepidation. He agilely slid underneath of the bed. Soon came a knock at the door, I opened the door and asked: "What’s the matter?" "A baby bear has just run away from the bear barn, hope it did not disturb you, OK?" "Oh, yes. Here it is." I pointed at the place where the little one was hiding.
They leaned over, and right away grabbed him. They brutally pulled him outside at full stretch. They had four legs tied, two pair of feet together, and a long thick stick between while being carried away. When the bear left the door, his upturned head bent over was helplessly staring at me. It was a pathetic begging gaze.
After dawn, a foreman, Mr. Zhang led me visit their bear barn. We came to a tall building of a few thousand square meters. The inside was huge, with six cages, side by side, and each cage had a withered black bear inside. The strange thing was that they were all girdled with shining bellyband-like things. Mr. Zhang told me, "These are used for taking the bile. The current price of the bear bile is about 300 Yuan per gram." (Approximately 1 Chinese Yuan=CD$0.157).
He took me to the front of the first cage, and gestured to tell me: "Taking bile is beginning." I saw that two sturdy workers were fastening the bear in a quick and neat way on both left and right sides, and pulling a thick rope out from each side of the steel bellyband through a special pulley. They shouted in chorus, "Hey –“. I saw the steel bellyband on the bear’s body tightening contraction by contraction. Suddenly, the bear exhaled a hysterical roar: "Ouch -" That was simply not a roar, but an abnormal mournful cry. Meantime, the bear was desperately looking upward and painfully glaring with round eyes; four bulky palms scratching the ground, giving off an ear-piercing sound:"squeak, squeak".
For a moment, the aquamarine liquid was flowing out through a steel pipe underneath of the abdomen: "drip, drip". The operational workers slowly loosened the rope again, and then pulled up the next round, accompanied by another hoarse sob. I saw the tears instantaneously dropping out from the bear’s eyes. She looked like a human being clenching the teeth, bowing the body to tolerate the endless suffering. How miserable the tragic scene was, and I could not bear to look again. I turned and walked away. At this point, I just came to realize that night the sorrowful yell was the groan sent out by the bears who were suffering intense pain in the unendurable twilight time.

Mr. Zhang followed me to the door. I challenged him with a trembling voice: "Do you guys have any humanity? They are all living things!" Mr. Zhang calmly said: "No choice. What we are doing is just a job." After settling down a little bit emotionally, I reluctantly asked him: "How often will a portion of bile be taken?" He replied: "That depends on the circumstances. For ones with more bile, could be twice a day, but ones with a little, only once every two days. Usually a bear produces 2,000 grams of gall powder annually. You can exploit it for 10 years." My heart was trembling. Twice a day, and 10 years, what kind of evil figures were these? That was deadly torture to be suffered through twice a day; the bears must endure for 10 years such an inhumane punishment; 7,200 times of heart-wrenching and cruel treatment. Day after day, year after year of torment, even with the resilience and vitality, it is difficult to persevere. My heart was broken.
I proposed to go back, but Mr. Zhang said: "In a while, the little bear is going to have surgery. At this critical moment you cannot go. On behalf of Chief Liu, if you go, in case of any trouble, who would be blamed for the consequences!" I went with him back to the bear barn. In response to his calling, the four sturdy workers surrounded the front of the cub, and tightly tied him with chains. The cub was looking at everyone in horror. When he saw me, his eyes were at once brightening, and anxiously staring at me.
My eyes were moist. At this time, he even knelt down to me. "Plop". It was that his four hooves knelt down at the same time. Mr. Zhang waved his hand down to order beginning the surgery. The cub disappointedly looked at the ceiling, bursting into tears "Ma -". It sounded very tragic, and extremely distressing. It was the heart-shocking wail, which I have never heard in this world. It would be simply to shout out "Mother," if he had used a human language. Even those killer-like workers stirred.
At this time, an unusual shocking scenario came about. An adult bear in another cage screamed aloud. To my surprise, she gradually unfurled the thumb-like iron bars using her gigantic hands and jumped out. Those workers, frightened, fled away in all directions. I was suddenly dumbfounded, as if my feet were lead. I could not move even a step. And yet the big bear ignored my existence, quickly jumped over in the front of the baby bear, and then tried to untie the thick chain with its awkward large hands. No matter how hard she tried, she was not able to make it. She had to kiss her baby bear, closely snuggled him in her own arms, and lovingly licked off baby’s tears in eyes with her tongue. She hummed to comfort her beloved child. Also, as if the little bear called “mother” again and again, sobbed "hum", and sought help to save his life from his mother.
Suddenly, the mother bear growled, and with her larger hands mercilessly pinched baby's neck, snarling while pinching again and again with teeth and nail. She did not loosen her huge hands until the cub’s body limply fell down. She looked at the dead child, while sobbing and whining, as if shouting: "Oh my child, Mom cannot save you, but you are not going to suffer anymore. Mom would like to say sorry to you. AAAAAH!
The mother bear bit her hair first, and then pulled the steel bellyband out of her body. That steel pipe flew out with the half gallbladder. Suddenly the fur on the abdomen was dyed red with blood, and it turned to gush bright red blood. I saw she screamed and madly rush to hit the wall. "Bang -" the wall came crashing collapsed. I was numb, and did not know how I got out of this brutal bear barn.
The whole day, my mind was full of those tragic scenes. I asked myself in my heart: was what the mother bear did real maternal love? I thought it was. It was a sort of helpless maternal love. At that time and that place, she did not have the ability to help her child escape from 10 years of hellish pain. In desperation, she could only destroy the love that she had created, and then tried to find him and accompany to another place. And so it was.

Contemplating my thoughts: Men, ah men, are you the devils of desire, or the crowns of creation?
