Spring Cleaning the Capital
April 11 to May 11, 2003
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spring Cleaning the Capital is an annual campaign to reduce litter in the City of Ottawa. Residents from all communities are invited to participate. Clean up around your home, business, school or somewhere in the community and help keep Ottawa clean and green.
Register before May 31 by completing the registration form or call us at 580-2424, extension 28899. We'll help you by providing clean-up supplies, helpful hints and picking up your collected litter where required.
By registering, you are eligible to win one of many prizes donated by our sponsors.
Here's how you can take part:
Start at home
Cleaning up the property around your house will encourage your neighbors to do the same. Before you know it, your whole street will be spotless!
Please note that all garbage that is picked-up on your private property will be collected on your regular garbage day.
Clean up your community
Organize a group project to clean up an area in your community. Pick a park, bus stop, pathway or any other area you care about and see how fun and satisfying it is to work with friends to make your community cleaner and greener!
At school
Schools have organized some of our biggest and best clean-up projects over the past few years! Clean-up projects can be a fun and cooperative way to learn about the importance of a clean and safe environment.
At work
As an Ottawa business person, there are lots of ways you can help out during the campaign:
Clean up the area in front of and around your business.
Cut the grass on the boulevard adjacent to your business.
Get together with nearby businesses to clean up an area in the community.
Sponsor a community group or school that is planning a clean-up project - donate incentive prizes, clean-up supplies or sponsor a clean-up celebration event like a barbecue or picnic.
Graffiti paint-over projects
If you want to undertake a graffiti paint-over project on City of Ottawa property (only) we can help by providing:
advice
support
project coordination
paint and supplies
a city site
Please send us a before and after photo of your graffiti paint-over project.
Sealing of Pressure-treated Wood
In 2003, the City is offering support to volunteers who want to seal pressure-treated wood play structures in city parks. Register your project and we will contact you to discuss the proposal. If you want to undertake a Pressure-treated wood play structure sealing project on city property, we can help by providing:
Project approval
Project coordination and advice
Safety tips and instructions
Recommended sealant and supplies.
Clean-up tips
Capital Clean-Up Day is Saturday, April 26, 2003
Join the thousands of people across the city who will be helping us keep Ottawa clean and green on this very special day. Start with your own yard, clean the front lawn, the sidewalk, the adjacent boulevard and curbside. And if you still have some energy, put on your sweeping shoes, grab a partner and clean around the block!
Win a prize! We will be patrolling with our sponsor's vehicle to give out prizes.
Compost, recycle, and dispose of waste properly.
Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands.
Supervise children in their clean-up efforts.
Flush animal feces down the toilet.
Sweep up your driveway instead of hosing it down.
Do not lift heavy branches or fallen limbs that are not your own property.
Bring all toxic materials to the City's Household Special Waste Depot.
If you find a needle :
Children should NEVER touch needles.
If you pick-up needles - handle them with extreme caution.
