BENGHAZI, Libya/LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - Rebels in eastern Libya have captured members of a British special forces team but the issue will be resolved shortly, rebel sources said on Sunday.
The Special Air Service (SAS) unit was on a secret diplomatic mission to make contact with opposition leaders involved in the struggle against Muammar Gaddafi's government, the Sunday Times reported earlier.
The British goverment declined to comment on the affair. But a Libyan human rights activist with links to the rebels told Reuters that Britain was negotiating to secure their release.
"They (the rebel army) did capture some British special forces. They could not ascertain if they were friends or foes. For our safety we are holding them and we expect this situation to be resolved soon," said the rebel source in Benghazi.
"They are safe and in good hands. We do not know why they (British government) did not get in touch first or (detail) the purpose of their mission," he told Reuters.
Another rebel source said the group, numbering eight people carrying British diplomatic passports, were arrested about 30 km from Benghazi.
"We think this issue will be settled very swiftly," he said.
British Defence Secretary Liam Fox said a British diplomatic team was in Benghazi but he declined to comment on whether special forces had been captured.
"I can confirm that a small British diplomatic team is in Benghazi. We are in touch with them, but it would be inappropriate for me to comment further on that for reasons I'm quite sure you understand," Fox told the BBC.
The Geneva-based Human Rights Solidarity group, which employs a number of Libyan exiles, told Reuters a team of eight special forces personnel had been seized by rebels about 10 km (6.25 miles) from Benina airport, which serves Benghazi.
An activist with the group, Jiumma Elomami, said "they are under arrest but we have information that the British authorities are now negotiating with the new opposition council to negotiate their release."
He said it was not clear whether British officials had also been arrested alongside the troops, whose regiment has seen service in Iraq and Afghanistan and has a special place in British military folklore.....

如果想玩一下标题党,是不是可已这样:

"茉莉花革命带头党利比亚奇遇记", 或者

"看利比亚茉莉花革命者怎样欢迎带头党人"

On Sunday, British special forces were freed, along with a diplomat, after being briefly detained by opposition in eastern Libya. Sources say the group left on the HMS Cumberland, a British warship.
British Defense Secretary Liam Fox wouldn’t confirmed that the British troops were detained in an interview with BBC. He said that they have a small diplomatic team in Benghazi and are in touch with them, but he couldn’t say any more than that.
According to other reports in the media, however, there were up to 8 men in the unit that was being held after a secret mission to put British diplomats in touch with leaders in the opposition against Muammar Gadaffi ended in embarrassment. The unnamed sources cited say that the opposition was angry over the intervention of special forces and ordered them to be locked up on a military base. Last week, British prime minister David Cameron said that they wanted to contact the opposition to find out what they want and who they are.
The incident followed another involving 3 Dutch Navy troops being held in Libya by forces loyal to Gadaffi. The Dutch Ministry of Defense says that the February 27 incident happened during an effort to evacuate a national from Libya. Four days after the event, the Netherlands said that their helicopter was prevented from taking off and explained that they kept it secret for security reasons. As of Thursday, intensive diplomatic talks were underway, they noted. Since then there hasn’t been an update on the issue.

My impression is these guys were protecting the diplomat in his mission to get in touch with the opposition leader(s). However, the opposition leaders are not necessarily in the mode of getting western interference as they have the upper hand over the Gahdafi government right now.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that things will not spin out of control before it's too late. A mid-east in turmoil and soaring oil price is not particularly in anyone's interest, except for me, who bought a small car with great gas mileage:).

technically a civil war in Libya ,or chaos in Mideast will be good for the western conutries even the whole world. but as human being lots of ppl including me don't wanna see that.
