Ottawa “Learn-to Camp” Event at the Rideau Canal National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site
June 18 – 19, 2011

The Rideau Canal National Historic Site and UNESCO World Heritage Site is pleased to inform your organization about the upcoming “Learn-to Camp” Event, presented by Parks Canada and Mountain Equipment Co-op.

This year is Parks Canada’s 100th Anniversary and we are excited about celebrating our Centennial year with Canadians! We look forward to introducing families from Ottawa / Gatineau to camping on the Rideau Canal and providing them with the skills that will enable them to have enjoyable and memorable camping experiences.

The Ottawa “Learn-to Camp” event will take place at the Rideau Canal Long Island Lockstation, in Ottawa South, on June 18-19, 2011. The event will take place from 1:00 p.m. on June 18 to 11:30 a.m. on June 19. The entire event will be facilitated and supervised by Parks Canada staff, who will be on-site throughout the event.

We are looking forward to welcoming 25 – 30 families from Ottawa / Gatineau to participate in this fun, interactive event, which will include the following activities, equipment and meals, all of which will be provided free of charge to the participants:

 Transportation by bus from Dows Lake Pavilion, in central Ottawa, to the Long Island Lockstation (approximately 30 minutes drive time) – pick-up at Dows Lake Pavilion, 1001 Queen Elizabeth Drive, will occur at 1:00 p.m. on June 18.

 Return transportation by bus from the Long Island Lockstation to Dows Lake Pavilion, Ottawa – bus will leave Long Island Lockstation at 11:00 a.m. and drop-off in Ottawa at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 19.

 Overnight camping at the Rideau Canal Long Island Lockstation. The overnight camping will be facilitated and supervised by Parks Canada staff, who will be on-site throughout the event.

 Tents and sleeping pads will be provided free of charge by Mountain Equipment Co-op for 30 families (approximately 100 participants).

 Evening camping-style dinner (with selection of one of three BBQ meals: vegetarian, chicken, beef).

 Morning camping-style breakfast.

 Fun, interactive workshops and activities, including:
• How to use camping equipment and set up a campsite
• How to prepare and cook camping meals
• How to prepare a campfire
• Leave-no-trace principles and camping etiquette
• “How a canal lock works” interactive guided tour by Rideau Canal Long Island Lockstation staff
• Guided nature walk and wildlife observation by Rideau Canal Resource Conservation staff
• Guided Voyageur Canoe tour on the Rideau Canal
• Catch and release fishing on the Rideau Canal
• Campfire sing-along and stories

Participants will be required to supply and bring the following items for themselves and their families:
• Sleeping bags / bedding and pillows
• Clothing for daytime and sleeping
• Hats & sun screen
• Snacks & food that they may wish to have to supplement the meals provided

A “what to bring” checklist will be provided to all registered participants.

There is a restricted number of families that we can host for this event (a maximum of 30 families), so registration for this event will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

For information about this camping event and to reserve your space, please contact the Rideau Canal Headquarters by telephone at 613-283-5170.

Overnight parking is available free of charge on-site for the participants who wish to drive and park at Long Island Lockstation (just north of Manotick, in Ottawa South). Overnight parking on-site at the lockstation is only available for this special event!

However, for participants who wish to park at Dow’s Lake Pavilion parking lot overnight, there will be a parking fee of $12.00 per vehicle that participants will be responsible for paying themselves. (Parks Canada will not be able to pay for the parking fee at the Dow’s Lake Pavilion parking lot.)

It is essential for participants to register in advance and to notify Parks Canada by June 14 if they need to cancel their registration so we can allow other people to attend.

Please note that this is a very special event at the Rideau Canal Long Island Lockstation, as camping is not normally permitted at this location or other locations along the Rideau Canal unless you arrive by boat or by organized bicycle tour.

Also, please note that swimming is not permitted at the Rideau Canal Long Island Lockstation.
