If car safety is high on your list, you need to check out this new list of the deadliest cars for the 2005-08 model years, as determined by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Not surprisingly, small econo-boxes and high-performance sports cars have the highest death rates in accidents.

Conversely, large SUVs are among the safest cars on the road, boasting some of the lowest death rates—largely due to their electronic stability control and heavier weights.

IIHS found that the overall average death rate per million vehicles was 48 deaths in the most recent study.

The previous overall death rate: 79 for vehicles from the 2001-04 model years.

For the 1999-2002 model-year vehicles, the death rate was 87.
