The City of Ottawa's chief medical officer of health has issued a heat warning for Wednesday and Thursday, warning residents Environment Canada is expecting a humidex of at least 40.

The temperature in Ottawa is expected to hit 32 C on Wednesday and reach 34 C on Thursday, according to Environment Canada, but the humidity will make for more uncomfortable conditions.

Dr. Isra Levy, the city's medical officer of health, warned residents extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and even death.

"Heat is hardest on the elderly and chronically ill," said Levy in a statement issued Wednesday. "If they have no protection from the heat, such as access to air conditioning and plenty of fluids, they can develop serious health effects and even die."

The heat warning is automatically declared when Environment Canada forecasts a humidex of 40 or more for at least two consecutive days.

Much of central Canada is in the middle of a heat wave that had earlier hit the prairie provinces.

Environment Canada also issued a warning for Gatineau and parts of the Outaouais, including Maniwaki and Chelsea, saying humidex values would approach 40 on Wednesday and be above 40 on Thursday.
