Who is at risk?

Those who have travelled to the City of Hanoi, Vietnam; the People's Republic of China including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; and Singapore and Taiwan, and who have experienced symptoms, including high fever, within 10 days of their return
Individuals who have come into close contact with someone having SARS
Individuals who have visited Scarborough Hospital, Grace Division, and York Central Hospital (Richmond Hill) on or after March 16, 2003 and did not wear a protective mask

Who should be quarantined (or on home isolation)?

Staff, patients or visitors who were at the Scarborough Hospital - Grace Division or York Central Hospital (Richmond Hill) on or after March 16th and did not wear a protective mask. This includes those with no symptoms.
Individuals who have come into close contact with someone having SARS and did not wear a protective mask. Close contact means having cared for, lived with, or having had direct contact with respiratory secretions and body fluids of a person with SARS.

Should travellers returning home from these areas stay home from work or school?

No.They do not need to stay home if they are symptom free. The risk of contracting SARS from traveling to these areas is very low. There appears to be no risk of transmission of SARS from people who are not ill.

Travellers should monitor themselves for signs and symptoms for 10 days. If you are a traveller and develop symptoms, you should stay home from work or school. If you develop a fever over 38°C, call:

your physician
Telehealth Ontario, 1 866 797-0000 (24 hours/day, 7 days per week)
the SARS Info Line at 613 724-4222

What should I do if I am quarantined (or on home isolation)?

Monitor yourself for symptoms and take your temperature twice a day
Remain at home in isolation for 10 days following last exposure even if you are experiencing no symptoms (do not leave the house or receive any visitors; may go outside in backyard as long as the yard is not shared with other people)
During this time, wear a mask when in the same room with another household member. There is no need to wear a mask if you are alone in a room
Change the mask once a day or if becomes wet or dirty
Sleep in a separate room if possible
Do not share personal items such as towels, drinking cups or cutlery
Wash hands frequently.
If you are at risk, staying at home and limiting your exposure to others is the best way to control the spread of SARS to family, friends and co-workers. All individuals in home isolation should call the SARS Info Line at 724-4222.
