美国《纽约时报》网站9月14日发表题为“经过一场长征，中国人向资本主义圣殿屈服”的文章，作者：史蒂文・埃朗热。全文摘编如下：

　　曾经是美国人，然后是日本人，接下来是俄罗斯人。现在是中国人。

最近几个月，巴黎成了中国人的天下，他们来这里的目的更多是购物，而不是品尝大餐。法国旅游发展署说，对中国游客来说，个人游仍然是昂贵且受限制的。因此，他们主要是跟随国内的巴士旅行团，总天数通常为10到15天，从德国出发，中途在瑞土、意大利或荷兰停留。他们几乎总是以巴黎为终点站，而且大多数人也总是把购物留到巴黎进行。

据法国旅游发展署统计，2010年，中国游客在法国的消费总额约为8.9亿美元，比2009年高出60%。

当然，来巴黎的美国人比中国人多，但是他们花钱不如中国人多。美国游客人均消费仅相当于中国游客的40%。只有俄罗斯游客的人均消费超过中国游客，但也只是高出一点点。

it depends on how you translate "surrender" into Chinese.

I guess in this article, the author just wanted to show that the Chinese are now spend more money than any people around the world.

But you have to admit, all these stuff can be purchased in China but ~40% more expensive.
And Chinese people tend to show off. They don't really enjoy watching Eiffel tower, the museum since most of them cannot really appreciated. All they could do is just to buy luxury and to show off when they are come back.
Therefore, the author is actually using "surrender" to make joke on Chinese. However, I guess I know much deeper than the author on the people in China.
That is there is a significant distance between the poor and the rich in China but all the people are very poor spiritually.
