OTTAWA — The city will start regulating the private parking industry more closely, and collecting tickets on private lot operators’ behalf, after a city council vote Wednesday. Many private lot owners issue their own “tickets” for parking infringements, but they’re hard for the owners to enforce and equally hard for people to protest if they believe they’ve been ticketed wrongly. Council approved a measure, backed by Ottawa’s large parking operators, to license larger parking-lot operators and let them issue tickets that will be enforced by the city, in exchange for a share of the proceeds. It’ll also cut down on administrative trouble, city officials say, since as many as 2,600 people come to city offices each year to complain about private “tickets” that have no official status.
