OTTAWA — As soon as it can be calibrated, a new digital sign will start showing passersby on Laurier Avenue near Metcalfe how many cyclists have rolled past on the city’s segregated bike lanes. It was installed indoors, in the window of the Calvina coffee shop on the south side of Laurier, because that’s much cheaper than affixing it outside somewhere. The equipment’s been donated by a sponsor. “For the city, it keeps costs much lower,” said engineer Colin Simpson, who’s in charge of the two-year bike-lane pilot project on the east-west artery.
