A 53-year-old western Quebec woman will be charged with murder Monday in the death of her seven-year-old daughter, police say.
Quebec provincial police say Murray Fitzpatrick arrived at his home Saturday in Chelsea, Que., just north of Gatineau, where he found his daughter Sophie unconscious.
He also found his 53-year-old wife, Catherine Dufresne, seriously injured and called 911. Both were taken to hospital where the girl was pronounced dead, while the mother survived.
Dufresne remains in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said strangulation is a possible cause of Sophie's death, pending an autopsy. They would not confirm the mother’s injuries.
The father has been cleared of any involvement in the death.
Mother recovering in hospital, to be charged
Murder charges are to be laid against Dufresne at a Gatineau courthouse later Monday morning, police said. Her lawyer will represent her as she continues to recover in hospital where she was arrested Sunday.
Neighbours told Radio-Canada the Fitzpatricks are a well-known family in the Chelsea area, involved in many community activities.
They also said Sophie was adopted a couple of years ago from China.
Outaouais police began the investigation, but it has been taken over by provincial police.
