CFC Class System Suck
Came across an article in NY Times this morning. Thought it might be interesting to many in this board and inspirating for Chinese communities in Canada, including those here in Ottawa.
A short background about Ms Pak in the article: She was 63 years old, born in China; moved to Hong Kong, immigrated to US San Francisco area at 17, got a journalist degree from Comumbia University in NY City, returned to San Francisco, worked for many years as reporter, and then changed career to actively engage in social activities for the Chinese community. In working hard as social activist and making many projects succeed, she has become a formidable political power blocker in San Francisco for years, and finally helped elect the first Chinese American Mayor Edwin Lee.

My take for the assertion that we are in a desparate need here in Canada of Ms. Pak type of political blockers, activists, etc.,:
She is fluent in both English and Chinese (Cantonese in her case) which is essential and basics for good communication; an insider of how American system work (her training and working experience as journalist); her big heart (she has fought earnestly for the interests of people (mostly Chinese in the area, but not for her own interest, at least not for money); shrewd, sharp and direct; ect.,.
One more important thing, she has never interested in her own election to any public office, that makes her an ideal political blocker (she choose to work behind the scene is a very shrewd move for herself and very important in Chinese community, that makes her a unity force, instead of a seperating force and an infighting force).
San Francisco, with merely 25% of Chinese population, has elected its first Chinese American Mayor. Why not in Toronto and Vancouver?
I would like to see Ms Pak's type, powerful Chinese activists pop up in Canada, and help fight for and build Chinese Canadian interests.
