Pets: Biopsy best route for dog’s autoimmune disorder

Q: We have a four-year-old Sheltie. This summer, her nose started to lose its black pigmentation and turned pink. By the fall, the nose had become quite crusty and raw and started bleeding. Our veterinarian thinks she has a condition called discoid lupus erythematosus, or DLE, and told us that we would need a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. In the meantime, she gave us a steroidal ointment to put on her nose. Unfortunately it does not help because she immediately licks it off! Do we need to do the biopsy? What can we do to treat her nose?
