BEIJING ― Former Chinese Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang, who promoted
reform and open policy but was ostracized over the pro-democracy movement in
1989, died of a heart ailment in a Beijing hospital Monday, Chinese sources
said Wednesday. He was 83.
Zhao became premier in 1980 and the party's general secretary in 1987. He
advocated economic reforms and open foreign policy but was ousted from his
posts in 1989 as he opposed a policy of oppression and sought dialogue with
pro-democracy students demonstrating in Tiananmen Square. (Kyodo News)
