Your Challenge
Within the Research Computing Support Group, the incumbent of this position will be responsible for providing effective support for High Performance and Cloud Computing (HPC) platforms and software used for scientific computation within the NRC research programs. This includes supporting scientific software development in a clustered and parallel programming environment, parallel systems and hardware, operating systems and security, layered products and applications, the installation, development and optimization of computational software for research clients, defining computational needs and requirements, as well as providing assistance to research clients and group staff with all aspects of scientific computing.
This position is a position within the newly created Shared Services Canada.
Screening Criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Master’s Degree specializing in Computer Science, or one of the Physical Sciences, Mathematics, or Engineering with a strong computational emphasis.
Experience
Significant experience working with computational scientific or engineering research applications, including the use of Fortran and C, supporting Linux environments and software tools;
Significant experience providing computing related client support;
Significant experience handling progressively more complex client requirements in a research support environment would be considered an asset;
Experience in analysing, trouble shooting and resolving complex hardware and software problems;
Experience in systems analysis, software development and programming;
Experience in the installation, maintenance, and system administration of various distributions of Linux based systems would be considered an asset;
Experience with HPC Cluster and/or Scientific Cloud Computing environments would be considered an asset.

Technical Competencies:
Advanced knowledge of computer hardware, systems architecture and operating systems principles;
Advanced knowledge of the Linux system, software tools and shell programming;
Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as Fortran and C/C++ and scripting languages such as Perl, used in scientific applications;
Solid knowledge of the Linux system middleware operating environment, such as compilers, debuggers and libraries;
Solid knowledge of scientific computing in a distributed and clustered HPC environment including job scheduling, parallel programming software, virtualization and GPGPU programming;
Basic knowledge of Linux system administration and management;
Basic knowledge of system and network security;
Basic knowledge of data communications and TCP/IP networking;
Basic knowledge of graphics applications, HTML and XML Web related technologies;
Basic knowledge about NRC and its research programs;
Ability to diagnose and solve complex software and hardware related problems;
Ability to work independently in a client focused environment.
