Q: We have a little three-year-old female Havanese dog. A few months ago, she started to shake her head constantly and scratch at her ears. Our veterinarian determined that she had an ear infection and, after two weeks of treating with eardrops, the ear infection resolved. Unfortunately, she has had several episodes since then that clear up when we administer the eardrops. The breeder who we bought her from told us that we could expect ear problems for the rest of her life because Havanese dogs have “floppy” ears and this makes them prone to ear infections. Is this true? If it is, then how can we hope to ever keep her from getting ear infections? Would routine ear cleaning help?
