Ottawa’s property taxes will go up 2.39 per cent next year on the strength of a city council vote for the 2012 city budget Wednesday morning. Mayor Jim Watson put down a brief rebellion by Innes Councillor Rainer Bloess, who wanted to put more money into OC Transpo to help deal with overcrowding but got little support from his fellow city councillors when he proposed $8 million in additional spending without offering $8 million in cuts somewhere else in the budget. Likewise, a handful of councillors objected to plans to raise the cost of mandatory transit passes for Carleton and University of Ottawa students but they lost their battle, too.
