Dashcam video of 401 crash shows need for drivers to pay attention, tow truck driver says
Owner of Metro One Auto Services Inc. relieved no one was killed in the crash

A Toronto tow truck driver whose dashboard camera captured footage of a car crashing into a truck on Highway 401, injuring three people, says the video shows there is a need for drivers to slow down, move over and pay attention.

Adil Kanan, owner of Metro One Auto Services Inc., a 24-hour towing service based in Toronto, said the 25-second video shows a collision that occurred on Saturday at about 7 p.m. in the west collector lanes of Highway 401 west of the Port Union Road on the left shoulder or the fast lane. The camera is attached to his tow truck.

"The white Lexus, travelling westbound at highway speed, literally just drove right into them," he said. "After seeing this firsthand, I am strongly of the opinion that this driver was not paying attention, 100 per cent."

"This is another strong example of why drivers need to be more aware of emergency vehicles on the highway. This video, it just supports the campaign that the OPP and the agencies are doing over the weekend, trying to get the message out to people to slow down and move over," he said.

"We are putting our lives at risk being on highway."

Kanan parked his tow truck in front of the truck after he arrived at the scene. He said the truck was sideways on the highway, with its front end touching the guardrail, after it had been rear ended in what was a minor crash. The truck was hit by a vehicle that failed to remain.

A man was standing beside the vehicle. Inside the truck, there was a woman in the driver's seat and another man in the front passenger seat.

He said he approached the three people but was told they already had tow truck services. Then he returned to his truck, called police about the crash, and witnessed the ensuing collision.

In the video, a white car crashes in the truck, sending debris and the man on the highway flying.

Kanan said the video is shocking but he is relieved no one was killed in the crash, though all three people involved were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"This could have easily been prevented," he said. "Had this driver been paying attention... even if he was not able to move over, he could have at least slowed down, well in advance. There was a lot of ample time. I observed this ahead of time, which is why I braced myself for the impact."

Kanan posted the video on Facebook and Instagram. He said his tow truck was damaged in the crash.

"It's a little bit scary," he said.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, spokesperson for Ontario Provincial Police's highway safety division, retweeted the video on Sunday, saying: "This why we say #SlowDownMoveOver."

Tires and debris flew into the air following a collision on a busy highway in Toronto – and the entire thing was captured on video.

The footage was recorded Saturday night by a dashcam attached to Adil Kanan’s tow truck. Kanan had been called to Highway 401 near Port Union Road to help deal with a disabled pickup truck.

When Kanan arrived at the scene, he found a woman in the driver’s seat of the truck, a man in the front passenger seat, and another man standing outside the vehicle.

“They seemed to be all alert and fine,” he told CTV Toronto.

Kanan then went back to his truck to alert police that he and the pickup truck were blocking one westbound lane of the highway.

“As I was sitting there looking through my back window, that’s when I observed the white Lexus approaching at a high rate of speed,” he said.

The white vehicle then hit the pickup truck, causing significant damage. The man who had been standing outside the truck was thrown into the guardrail. The two people inside the truck were ejected, and the driver ended up face-down on the highway. All three were listed in stable condition as of Sunday night.

Dash camera video showing a car smashing into a crashed truck at the side of Toronto’s Highway 401 over the weekend has police once again advising motorists to obey Ontario’s ‘slow down and move over’ law.

Emergency crews were called the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Port Union Road at around 7 p.m. on Saturday for a multi-vehicle crash.

Adil Kanan, a tow truck operator with Metro One Auto Services Inc., captured the video inside his vehicle. A man can be seen in the video reaching into a green pickup truck, which was facing the median and obstructing the passing lane on the passenger side when a white car approaches at full speed. The car smashes into the rear of the truck and sends the contents flying into the air.

The force of the impact caused the man to be thrown into the median. A woman and a younger man were ejected from the truck. The woman landed face down as the younger man is able to walk away from the crash. The driver of the car cannot be seen in the video.

“When this vehicle was approaching [the pickup truck] in lane one, there was no gesture to slow down. There was no gesture to signal and move over,” Kanan told Global News.

“You could tell whoever was operating that vehicle was not aware that this [pickup truck] was in front of them. Many other vehicles who were passing the accident had ample time to slow down and move over safely, which they did.”

Toronto Paramedics told Global News two people were taken to a trauma hospital in serious, but non-life-threatening condition and a third person was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Kanan, who said he has worked in the towing industry for about five years and has responded to many collisions, said this is the first time he has seen something like this. He also said the crash highlights the need for additional policing and highway collision and roads personnel.

“It’s definitely shocking. I think after the fact of knowing that everybody was fine, it puts you at a little bit of ease,” Kanan said.

“It’s still a little bit scary. You can’t really prepare for something like this.”

The crash comes on the same weekend Ontario Provincial Police were conducting a long weekend blitz, targeting drivers who don’t slow down or move over for emergency vehicles and tow trucks parked at the side of the road.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said police are still investigating the circumstances leading up to this crash. Schmidt echoed Kanan’s calls for all motorists to pay particular attention to road safety as officers continue to conduct enforcement of the ‘slow down and move over’ law.

“This is exactly why we have this kind of messaging to remind people of the importance of it and how unbelievably dangerous it is to be on the highways,” Schmidt said.

“That could have easily been a fatal or a multi-fatal and amazingly no one was seriously injured in that crash. You look at that dramatic video and it’s breathtaking.”
