I know that it is common for parents to feel emotional when the moment comes for their child.

有些失落，习惯就好。

Some points from the other side:
1. Don't make a big deal out of it, it's harder for both sides.
2. You still have a full summer before he leaves -- That's a long time for a teenager。 If you start getting emotional this early, he might feel too "heavy".

I think most of all, he wants understanding rather than protection. If you can REALLY think in his shoes, I'm sure you'll be fine.

平时您儿子占的越大，洞就越大，如果占去90%， 那这洞就不好填了
许多大洞妈妈就养条狗代替了
