I have come across this kind of attitude towards criticism quite often here in Canada. They are invariably either from Canadians who have never travelled abroad or from immigrants from third-world countries who do not know better. Very often an intolerance to criticism is a thin veil behind which you will find an overwhelming sense of inferiority.
Another interesting manifestation of this Canadian inferiority complex is the ubiquitous claim that "Canada is the best country in the world", which is trumpeted by the media and public figures alike like an article of faith. I have never seen this in any other country. Can you believe that the licence plate in BC actually bears the phrase "Best place on Earth"? If I were a resident of that province, I would be hugely embarrassed.
Back to Canadian/American education, the biggest problem is the weakness of the basic education (K-12/13). When you have almost half of all school leavers being functionally illiterate and unable to do simple mathematics like addition or multiplication, how can you compete in this globalized economy?

This is the best comment that I have seen on CFC!
Taking the case of "jamie hubley commits suicide" as example:
I wrote e-mail to the Mayor & two city councilors, including the father of jamie hubley. In that E-mail, I wrote:
"Anti-bullying movement should be led by the mayor & we should also pay attention to the work place bullying. A business owner in Kanata is bullying his employees every day so that we need to open an anti-bullying hotline."
No one send e-mail back to me.
