Here is my own experience:

That year 1977, I was 18 years old and just graduated from "High School" in the summer, I'm lucky for wasted only 3 or 4 months and got a chance to became "77".

However, I got only 9 years in school : 5 years in elementary, 2 years each in so called "Middle School" and " High School" .

I was the 2nd youngest in my class, the "oldest" ONE was 38 already and his daughter was in high school that year already.

好象据说79级报考时已经限制十足年龄不得超过28岁。而且没听说79级中有30-40岁的老同志。

补充两点：
1、78级考试时，是允许在校非毕业班学生提前加入考试，但好像是限制一所高中一名。本人当时不知道如何“争取”提名，所以失去当“学哥”的机会。
2、79级绝大多数是应届，但有漏网之鱼。因为本人班上就有“老大哥”同学，一位老中专毕业的中学老师在班上。

77年高考时也允许在校生提前参加,我们学校高一的考上6个,高二(当时还不算应届生,上一届已经毕业的算)的一个.

78年时,有的学校鼓励在校生提前参加高考,因为北京79级时是两届学生,一届上了小学6年级的,以后学制缩短,取消了6年级.海淀区用区级考试限制在校生提前参加高考,要求达到区考400以上的参加,我校只有一人提前高考.

79级绝大部分是应届考生.

Since the school system were changing and merging those days. For example, when cutting 1 year from elementary school, grad 5 and grad 6 both graduated at the same year.

Reason 2: you were a naughty student, and "留级了两次”

如果你小时候经历过随父母工作变化到处搬家的话，就可以解释这一现象：当时全国各地的学制是不同的，有秋季入学和春季如学之分，搬家后，为了能够轻松地赶上当地的学习进度，通常会重复上一个学期，这样，就出现一年的差别。也不排除小学里因早恋而留级。
