I don't like seeing the increase on my property tax bill either, and I don't appreciate the extra burdens imposed onto residents because of years' of mismanagement at City Hall, e.g., the sky-shot water fee for sewage upgrade, green bin, etc.

Nevertheless, I am not too concerned about property tax, because it accounts for only a very small portion of all taxes I pay each year, while the municipal services are more closely related to our day-to-day life and the community. Using a particular service or not, you benefit from it directly or indirectly. For example, people using public transportation help to make the roads less busy for drivers; social housing keeps people off street and make the community more balanced and "harmonized".

For an average double-income family, if their total tax obligation is made of 10 portions, I guess municipal tax probably is only 1 of the 10, provincial accounts for 3, and the federal takes the rest 6. If I look at the areas of responsibilities for these 3 levels of government, I would rather pay a higher proportion to the local government, and be more conservative at the federal level.

Anyway, this is what makes Canada the way it is.

If you pay 5000 property tax, and it is 1/10 of the total tax you pay, do you mean you pay 50,000 tax in total?

The main point is not to avoid your contribution to this society, and I have no problem to contribute to this society. The issue is the more tax you paid, the more money these governments will waste. The list of such waste examples is not short, from health premium, e-health, to OCtranspo ......

The more money we paid, the government will have more money to play with, the union will have more to play with, in the end, you will contribute to the growth of bureaucracy and lazy working force. Greece is such an example.

I agree $50,000 total tax sounds a bit too high for a regular family, but it's not out of whack if you count in income tax and sales tax. We are talking about what a double-income family here, who can afford a $500K house.

Just a bit exercise: For the family that can afford a $500K house, apply the 3-time rule of thumb (3 times of gross income = the house price one can afford), the household income may be around $160K/year. Taxable income may be at $130K (split by two), the average tax rate on this income level would be ~24%, that's $30K. With the $100K take-home money, if they spend $80K, then it's $10K on sales tax, plus $5K property tax, that's $45K all tax paid.

I agree with your argument on taxation in general. I just have a bit different feeling on various taxes we have to pay.

....

A lot of couples pay $50,000 in tax a year, plus HST. You do the math. :flaming:

然后,买东西和服务很多收HST(汽油还有省税、联邦税)吧?

Could be, Paying about 45,000-50,000 a year for income tax, the family or individual income would be around 150,000 I guess.

But I guess we did not consider HST here, which is a bit hard to predict.

For a couple, a $150,000 family income is very possible. The deductions could be less if they had more than one kid. :p
