The Bluesfest killdeer couple remain on their nest and incubating their four eggs, two days after their eviction and relocation to a safer home behind the festival’s main stage.

The pair could be seen flying around the festival grounds Friday morning, searching for food before returning to their famous “bluesnest.”

It’s unknown how the birds will react when Bluesfest performers arrive and turn the volume up to 11. Though the nest is cordoned off and safe from being trampled, there’s no way to know how the birds will cope with high volume acts like the Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews and Bryan Adams.

If the birds do abandon their eggs, bird specialist Monika Melichar of the Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Minden, On., is prepared to make the three-hour drive to Ottawa with a specialized incubator to try to save the eggs. Killdeer eggs typically take about 26 days to hatch. No one knows when the eggs were laid, and if the babies will hatch before Bluesfest opens on July 5.

Ironically, if the parents do abandon the nest, they’ll likely just fly to a new location and lay new eggs, Melichar said.

Bluesfest continues to be installed on the grounds of the Canadian War Museum while the nesting Killdeer keeps a close watch. The two adults were seen flying around the area of the nest before one went back to sit on the eggs on Friday morning.
