The City of Ottawa Archives opened its newest exhibition in the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery at City Hall. Postcards from Ottawa: Traveller Tales looks at Ottawa’s history through the eyes of visitors and travellers to Ottawa.
It’s a fun and informative look at many of the events and people that have shaped the City, beginning with the First Peoples in the Ottawa Region. Ottawa is located on un-ceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinabe Nation, whose ancestors have lived on this territory for millennia, and whose culture and presence continue to nurture this land.
It explores the early years of Bytown and Ottawa as European explorers, lumber barons and early settlers helped the City grow. The exhibit takes you right up until today, with more recent memories of La Machine and Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.
In between there’s a little bit of everything else.
Relive the night Elvis came to town. Learn about Charles Lindbergh’s visit to the capital. Or reminisce about the time Dutch Princess Juliana gave birth to her daughter Margriet at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Canada took the extraordinary measure of declaring the hospital ward as extraterritorial, allowing Margriet to be considered a Dutch citizen despite her being born in Ottawa.
Check out a few unique items found in the exhibit, including Barbara Ann Scott’s Olympic gold medal, gifts Ottawa mayors have received and even a canoe!
Visit Postcards from Ottawa: Traveller Tales at the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery at Ottawa City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West. The gallery is and is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm. The exhibit is free and is wheelchair accessible.
