The Carleton University Art Gallery is opening the following show on Nov.
17th.

Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square: Shui-Bo Wang
(17 November 2003 - 1 February 2004)
Curated by Marnie Fleming, Curator of Contemporary Art, Oakville Galleries.
Organized and circulated by Oakville Galleries with the financial assistance
of the Town of Oakville, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario
Arts Council.
Features Shui-Bo Wang's biographical animated film Sunrise Over Tiananmen
Square, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999, and 26 framed
drawings that went into its making. Through a rich collage of original
artwork, archival and family photographs, Wang's story of modern China
traces his growing disenchantment with official Communist Party ideology and
his struggle to formulate a new artistic vision.

As this may be of interest to members of your club, I would like to send
some invitations to you. Do you perhaps have a mailing list of your
members, or could I send you some invitations to you to hand out? If you
would like the invites sent to you, please provide me with your address.

Thank you,

We'd like to invite you to the opening of Shui-Bo Wang: Sunrise Over
Tiananmen Square at the Carleton University Art Gallery on Monday, 17
November, from 5-8 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Artist Shui-Bo Wang will give a talk on the show in the gallery on Tuesday,
18 November at 12 noon. Everyone is welcome.

Shui-Bo Wang: Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square
On June 4, 1989 the world watched in horror as news footage showed Chinese
government troops firing on demonstrators in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
Artist Shui-Bo Wang was 28 when he took part in those protests. Today he is
a filmmaker in Montreal and his biographical animated film Sunrise Over
Tiananmen Square was nominated for an Academy Award in 1999. This film, and
the drawings that went into its making, are the subjects of this exhibition.

Wang's story is the story of modern China as he chronicles his family
history, the formation of the Chinese Communist Party, the Cultural
Revolution, the death of Mao Tse-Tung and the events leading up to the
pro-democracy movement. Through a rich collage of original artwork, archival
and family photographs, Wang's compelling documentary traces his
disenchantment with official Communist Party ideology and his struggle to
formulate a new artistic vision.
