Oh I totally agree with you. Discovering what kind of person you are may not be an awakening but rather a continuous process. Have you noticed that people who made profound impacts on our lives are those who excelled in multiple disciplines: arts, philosophy, literature, even science. This shows that art is not an independent form of expression, but rather a converged, multi-disciplinary view that reflects one's own humanity (so to speak) towards the world.
It's true that modesty keeps us from learning new things and not to take things we already have for granted. One person who made such an impression on me was the acclaimed biologist David Suzuki, the host of CBC's Nature of Things. I watched an interview where he talked extensively about his parents, and how his parents, although without an impressive education as himself and his wife, continued to inspire him. In a world where we take a lot of things for granted, his modesty and sensibility really touched me.
