请教:有关孩子选择在Colonel By school上高中的一些观点

A friend send an information to me about IB, but I don't know how it is reliable.

Hi! I confess: before I got your question, I had never heard of the International Baccalaureate program. So I did some research on the program, and it seems like it is a fabulous thing. It reminds me of the AP exams that I took when I was in high school, but since you are getting a degree rather than only credit for the tests, it looks very favorable on your application. Not only have you gone through a rigorous academic program, but you have a lot of credit to your name. I would say that admissions officials would be very impressed with it. It proves that you are taking courses that constantly challenge you, as opposed to easier ones. The harder the courses you are taking, the more respect the admissions people have for you. And with the degree and credit you receive, it will increase, if not guarantee, your status. When doing some research I found out that of IB students:
- Most earned between half a year and a full year of college credit.
- Sixty percent became honor students at university.
- Seventy-five percent attended Ivy League Colleges.
The IB program seems very tough, but it seems well worth it. And with the college credit you receive, it will put you up for the scholars program at your college, as well as let you receive credit for your high school classes.
A university would have to be crazy to not want a kid who has completed and passed the IB program. It increases chances of admittance, financial aid, and academic standing. Colleges want to see that you are challenging yourself, and with the IB program, you are showing them that you are mature, intelligent and prepared for college

LZ, I have the same concern. We ask the school give us extended days to decide. I agree " 如果中等以下成绩,或是拿diploma的比例太小,我想还是算了别去了.否则再伤了孩子的自信心就不合算了."

"过几天拿到成绩,我好有个比较." How can you compare? you only know your son's. You never know others.

That's why I am also asking "有谁知道入学成绩是多少属于中等水平?过几天拿到成绩,我好有个比较."

得知了Colonel By Secondary School , IB. Program ，十二年级的应届毕业生郭啸跃同学，以极其优异的成绩荣获学校总督奖及Ottawa-Carleton District School Board 第一名以后，相信很多同学、家长希望对郭啸跃的学习和生活更多地有所了解，我们为此邀请了Glebe Collegiate Institute十一年级在学的黄牧青同学作为
我们的特邀小记者采访了郭啸跃同学。下面是黄牧青同学为我们整理的采访记录。


(牧青)：请问你的中文名字是？
(啸跃)：郭啸跃。

(牧青)：你在哪个学校读书？
(啸跃)：Colonel By Secondary School.

(牧青)：你的毕业平均分是多少？ 毕业后去那个大学？
(啸跃)：我的平均分是98.7，其中化学98，英文99， 数学100，物理100，地理96 还有电脑是99。 我决定九月份去Queens上大学读Commerce。

(牧青)：哇，98.7的平均分！那么高，Queens一定给了你很多奖学金吧？
(啸跃)：Queens两年一共给我$10，000的Entrance Scholar，也不太多，第一年的学费刚好Cover，第二年就要Cover不了。 其他的奖学金我就没有申请了。

(牧青)：98.7的平均分对我们每一个中学生来说都是梦寐以求的分了，很多人为此四年来都在发疯似的学习和努力着。 不知道你可不可以和大家Share一下你的学习经验及过程好大家都Fellow呢？
(啸跃)：呵呵，当然可以。 我每天早上六点半起床，然后要座一个小时的公共汽车从我家到学校。 放学回家后不会立刻做作业，我一般都会放松一下，吃完晚饭后才开始作业吧。 呵，可能由于我开始的晚，所以一般每天都要做到第二天凌晨一，
两点。 如果哪天十二点就睡觉的话，我会觉得那天很幸福。
要想学的轻松学的有效，我想最重要的是上课要听讲还有自己一定要知道自己学习的长处和短处。 只有上课听讲以后才知道老师的要求和课程内容，听课可以省去你花很多不必要的时间去Catch up 或是Review，听课真的很重要。 不是有个广为流传的说法，一个木桶的容量是由它最短的那个木板决定，所以，只有知道自己学习的长处和短处以后才能进步。 做笔记也是必要的，它能帮你用最短的时间复习、准备考试和测验。 还有每天都要复习当天学的东西，每天复习一会有助于你更好的理解知识而且考试复习的时候也不会太费力。

(牧青)：谢谢啊，真的全部都是 宝贵经验。 那么不知道你在学校里面都有什么其它的活动呢？
(啸跃)：我参加了我们学校对Yearbook的制作和编辑，四年的乐队，我吹黑管的，还参加过一个叫做“Reach for the Top"比赛，我们队在渥太华第一。

(牧青)：是什么动力支持你走下去的？
(啸跃)：我想很大程度上是一种自我的监督吧，呵呵，我妈妈爸爸都很支持我，不会逼我做不喜欢的事，他们都是让我自己的事情自己做主。 同学之间的竞争的也是一个动力吧，我在IB Program，IB里面的竞争都是特别激烈，同学也都是出类拔萃的，在这样的环境里你不得不去竞争。 我的老师们也都非常Supportive, 他们很关心学生，讲的课也很有趣。

(牧青)：那你以后有什么打算？
(啸跃)：先读Commerce, 然后我会在读法律或是MBA，那就以后看了，现在还说不准。

(牧青)：你喜欢学习吗？
(啸跃)：不能说是热爱但也挺ENJOY的吧，学习给我一种很充实的感觉，特别是现在，才真正理解学有所用的意思，呵呵。

(牧青)：很多的同学在学习的路上都会遇到一两个很严厉的老师，似乎不管你在怎么努力，他都看不见，给分给得特别苛刻。 如果你刚好遇到这样一位老师你会怎么办呢？
(啸跃)：这样的老师我还真没遇到过，不过要是我真遇到的话，开始我会认为自己霉运或者埋怨几句，然后会跟他斗，更加努力的学习，如果我做的很完美，我想老师不会不给我应该得到的分数的。

(牧青)：有没有什么建议给其家长和同学呢？
(啸跃)：我觉得有些时候家长对孩子的事情干涉的太多了，这样我不是很欣赏，总有一天你的孩子会离开你，那个时候孩子将要自己面对社会。如果你在之前过分的保护他，那么他什么时候可以学会独立呢？ 就算他跌倒了，他就知道这样做会跌，
而且以后要是遇到同样的情况，他会知道怎么站起来。 对同学来说，学习的过程当中要学会看待和承受压力，在未来的道路上将会有很多压力，学会了承受压力才会成左5c。

(牧青)：谢谢你的宝贵时间，今天学了不少的东西，真的受益匪浅啊，我想其他同学也会这样想的。
(啸跃)：没关系，我也很ENJOY这个采访，我也希望我的经历会对其他同学有帮助。

Can anybody whose kids attended Lisgar instead of accepting IB program offer can tell why you or your child made this choice?

Any response and advice would be much appreeciated...

If you live within the school boundary and apply quickly enough, Lisgar has to accept you. You have to pass the IB test to enter IB program. I know 2 students were rejected by CB IB this year, they will apply Lisgar on Tuesday next week. Both schools are top in Ottawa, Lisgar has historic tradition, CB has academic reputation. It has been ranked as #1 in last few years. Also both Lisgar Gifted and CB IB are tough, students have to pay more effort to get good marks comparing to other schools. Especialy, IB requires much more volunteer hours than other schools. Some people think it's waste of time, others think it's good to educate students responsible, sociable and committed instead of being a nerd.

IB可以考进去。

Lisgar主要收居住在附近区域的学生，可以接收少量居住在区域外的学生，以前是靠排队先后顺序录取，因为排队时间越来越长，第四年家长们在雨雪中排了四天三夜，从去年开始改为从网上递交申请，按先后顺序录取。

天啊,算算看,每天才睡几个小时呀.对于我这个年龄的家长都觉得睡不够,何况孩子呀.不知道郭啸跃是怎么熬过来的,四年啊!我挺佩服他,换成我,不仅学习没进步,身体却完蛋了.

Horrible! We don't even work so hard in China.

I wonder how my kids work out in IB program. They sleep more than 10 hours a day. They have a lot of activities too.

"The first phase is a review of decade-old attendance boundaries that have left Colonel By Secondary School overcrowded while the classrooms at Cairine Wilson Secondary School are less than three-quarters full."

I think there are few chance to close CS, a overcrowded school

At the CB school Parent Information Night, the principal pointed out that media exaggerated for school boundary review. The CB is overcrowded because a lot of grade 9 students who live outside the school boundary transfer to CB every year. If one school needs to be closed, it's more likely to be the low student register rate school, but during the review, all schools in that area should be reviewed for fairness.

Colonel By 关门的可能性比较大。这是从城市区域发展，人口年龄分布和未来的学生人数预测得出的。Colonel By 注册学生多，主要是外区来的学生多。新的学区划分决定已经划出。Colonel By的区域更小了。
