HST, now eco fee hitting consumers

The HST isn't the only new item on receipts that's taking more money from our wallets.
Consumers are shelling out for a new "eco fee" that also went into effect on July 1. The levy – on thousands of items such as dish soap or fire extinguishers – is a charge some manufacturers are passing on to consumers.
Companies have to pay the province a fee to recycle their products under legislation that's about two years old, the Toronto Star reports.
But several consumers are paying the added costs – sometimes a few cents or a few dollars extra depending on the product.
For a list of items that could be hit with a fee at the checkout – visit this website set up by Stewartship Ontario, the agency overseeing the eco fees.
A Stewardship Ontario spokesperson tells the Toronto Star that the decision was made to spend money on educating consumers after the levy was introduced rather than tell people the fee was on the way.
