Esso, Petro-Can cut gas price to 49.9

CANADIAN PRESS

Doing their bit to fuel positive sentiment in SARS-weary Toronto, Canada's two biggest gasoline retailers - Imperial Oil and Petro-Canada - are slashing the price of regular gas to 49.9 cents a litre in the city this weekend.
"The city has just been through a very tough time," Brian Fischer, senior vice-president of Imperial Oil, stated today.

"Now that things are starting to look better, we wanted to do something to encourage people to relax, take in the spring weather downtown, do some shopping, go to a restaurant or movie."

Petro-Canada spokesman Jon Hamilton said his company also wants to help a city recover from the economic blow of a travel warning that was issued last week - and dropped Wednesday - by the World Health Organization. Mid-grade fuel will cost 55.9 cents a litre and premium 59.9 cents.

The price of regular gasoline in Toronto averaged 66.4 cents a litre in last week's survey by the Ontario Energy Ministry.

In addition to cutting its regular price to 49.9 cents, Imperial said it will donate five cents from every litre purchased during the weekend "to support health care in Toronto."

The cheap-gas weekend, which began this afternoon, embraces gasoline stations in the area bounded by Highway 427, the Don Valley Parkway, Highway 401 and Lake Ontario.

It ends at midnight Sunday.

"It's our way of giving something back to Toronto," said Fischer, noting that the Canadian subsidiary of Exxon Mobil (TSX:IMO) is the only national oil company with its head office in Toronto. Petro-Canada (TSX:PCA) is based in Calgary.
