Children and the seat belt law
Under Ontario's seat belt law, drivers are responsible for properly buckling up children from birth until they reach age 16 and become responsible for themselves. Responsibility includes paying the fine, if convicted, of not having the child correctly secured by the seat belt or a child safety seat.
Babies under nine kg must travel rearfacing in a child safety seat. Toddlers nine to 18 kg must travel in forward facing child safety seats anchored by seat belts and tether straps. Older children must be properly secured by a seat belt. In Ontario, all child safety seats and seat belts must be worn correctly by law.
