When Ottawa resident Paula Pert was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in her right femur a week before Christmas, her five-year-old daughter calmly told her, “Well, I’ll sit on your other leg, then.” But her other daughter, old enough at eight to understand better, was “pretty shattered initially,” admits Pert. “It was shocking, to say the least. You just don’t know when that day is when you wake up and life’s going to be different.”
