a question about my MSN configuration

你可以试试直接用netmeeting呀。。。。。

I think they use router, because if I bypass the router, I can use it.

I have the same problem. Can not talk by voice through MSN Messenger on Windows9.x, but Windows XP version works well, I use Rogers also, no router. I was old that that's because a bug in Windows 9.x. And it's interesting that my two computers can talk each other with MSN that using the same IP (Internet connection share, one is gateway the other one is client) on Windows 9.x, I'm confused.
