附两位获奖者的essay:
Karen Yao:
Being very fond of the French language, I often try to find new opportunities to exercise my French abilities. This year, I obtained the French Language Exam DELF “diplôme d’études en langue française,” a standardized French examination which is recognized in France. Furthermore, I completed the American standardized French AP exam. Curious for more opportunities, I applied for the House of Commons Page Program. Being an arts student, I long yearned for a chance to work for the Canadian government. After a difficult elimination process of essay submission, French phone interview, and face-to-face interview, I was chosen among the thousands of applicants to become one of forty Pages in Canada this year to be working on Parliament Hill. I also discovered that of the fourty pages, I am the only Chinese representative. This not only demonstrates the Chinese minority among the larger scale, but also the fact that Chinese people should have more influence in our Canadian government. With this opportunity, I hope to inspire and help future Chinese students to become more drawn to opportunities like these, in which they may take part in serving the Members of Parliament of Canada.
In the past, I have been an active performer in the Chinese performing arts community. I have performed as part of the “腰鼓队”at numerous occasions: Dragon Boat Festival, Welcoming of China’s President Hu Jin Tao to Canada, and the Opening Ceremony Parade of the Museum of Nature. The performances were educative as they taught people the importance and pride in preserving one’s own cultural heritage.
Piano is my passion. Although late, I was lucky to have started at the age of 11 when I was most ambitious to strive and catch up to my friends who were already at level 5. After working very hard, I completed my grade 10 RCM in seven years. I have earned first places in Kiwanis competitions, as well as a scholarship and trophy. Last year, I won the Lydia Sierhuis Memorial Award for the highest grade 9 piano exam mark in Ottawa.
Other leadership activities in which I have partaken include peer-tutoring students in French and Math; volunteering at Garden Terrace Retirement home where I helped coordinate and host different social events; organizing the school’s knitting club; and fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society. I have also been part of the Global Awareness Club where we organized a Spaghetti Dinner. All proceeds went to the Free the Children Foundation to help with the Brick-By-Brick initiative and build a school for children in Sierra Leone. I had the opportunity to deliver informative presentations in our school about the differences in living conditions of children in Sierra Leone compared to those in Canada, as well as the importance of trying to help others achieve basic living standards and rights.
All in all, these experiences have reinforced my motto, “anything worth achieving is hardly ever easy, but if one sets their mind and actions to it, then the possibilities are endless.”
Jason Shao:
From computers and cell phones to electric cars and space shuttles, today’s world is full of amazingly engineered products! Tomorrow’s world will be even more so. Just as a sturdy house has a strong foundation, I must possess strong foundational knowledge for an engineering career. As I approach the end of high school, I do not believe I have finished my learning. Rather, I am ready to learn much more. Without a doubt, the University of Waterloo is the foundation of my higher learning and my future success, and a CFC Scholarship would be a great support towards my endeavors at the U of W.
Many have seen the world and just accepted it, but I have always asked questions. If a matter appears to be illogical or unclear to me, I will investigate it. From “why is the sky blue” to “how do you determine the value of π,” I view the world with inquisitive, logical eyes. Even teachers and friends are aware of my everyday problem-solving skills for both theoretical issues and practical uses. In school, my curiosity dominated my gifted classes of science and mathematics, in which I have received numerous achievement awards. An example of this state of analytical thinking was at the very early age of twelve as I built a motor using earth magnets and copper wires to generate enough energy to light up a LED. Not only did I regularly excel in school with my consecutive 100% marks in math, I have also received money prizes for my standing in the Annual Grade 12 Euclid Mathematics Competition. As the leader of my computer team, I have placed in the national top 25 of the DWITE computer science contest as well as qualifying for the ECOO provincial programming contest. Beyond national level informatics contests lies my participation in the Google Code Jam – an international computer science contest. On top of the academic success, my personal artistic side is also very important to me. I have completed the RCM piano exam with first class honours as well as completing the university level music harmony course at my current school.
I enjoy using my knowledge and skills to help others who are in need. As a math instructor at a Kumon Learning Centre, I learned to clearly communicate ideas to others. I am also very involved in my community as I volunteered in my church youth group, the Ottawa Youth Commission, and even at Hu Jin Tao’s arrival in Canada. Moreover, through organizing my schedule with academics, athletics, band, and jobs, I have learned to manage my time efficiently so that I can perform well in all those activities. As the continuing captain of the badminton team and a first clarinetist in the wind ensemble, I demonstrated outstanding leadership to my teachers and fellow students, winning many gold medals at tournaments and music festivals. In fact, this year, I won the City Badminton Championships and continued to represent the National Capital Region (Ottawa) at the provincial OFSAA finals. My leadership also extends to the foundation of the Stitch.it Club, as I, along with two friends, started the very first knitting club at Lisgar Collegiate Institute.
In addition to being a top achieving student in high school and I am highly motivated and very interested in pursuing a professional career in the field of engineering; therefore, I am applying for the scholarship of science. I believe that with my strong desire to excel and my acquired qualities of analysis, I can create a successful career and build a better tomorrow! I hope to pursue and fulfill my dream at Canada’s most innovative university next year with assistance of the CFC Scholarship.
