Since your car is parked outside, and what if there is freezing rain that there is ice on your windshield, and your car wipers actually stick onto windshield.
If your car has front windshield defroster (like your rear window), then you just start your car and have that on, it takes a while to MELT those ice.

If you use SCRAPER to remove ice, there is a possibility you break your wiper blade (Cost of replacement is 20 CAD plus, plus inconvenience).

A quick and easy way (also save fuel) is to have:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...ter+Windshield+&+Window+De-icer.jsp?locale=en

Spray onto windshield, wait for 2 - 3 minutes, the liquid will dissolve ice and you can remove ice easily.

If ice also build up on your car door, SPRAY onto those ice, wait!

Also, buy windshield washer with de-icer added, like:

Besides the above, I recommend a "Telescopic snow shovel",

If you are unlucky to stuck onto snow pile, you can use it to remove snow in front of your tire, beneath your car, then your car has traction and drive away easily. (This is important if you drive on highway to and fro Ottawa & Ottawa).

A bag of sand (onto ice, increase traction),
A warm WINTER glove (if you have to work outside > 10 minutes)
Chocolate bars (energy)
A blanket (to keep yourself warm, if your car broke down on highway)

Good luck and enjoy your first winter driving.
