OTTAWA — The killer in one of Ottawa’s bloodiest homicides has cleared an initial hurdle for early release under remnants of the recently abolished “faint hope” clause. A judge has ruled that Jean-Paul Poitras, sentenced to 25 years in prison for first-degree murder in the 1995 shooting, beheading and dismemberment of his lover’s husband, deserves an opportunity before a jury to make his case for an early release.
