Services lacking to keep mentally ill women out of jails, courts

OTTAWA — Ontario is desperately short of psychiatric services to keep mentally ill people out of jails and courts, but the shortage affects disproportionately more women than men, the region’s top psychiatrists say. As a result, a growing number of women who are found guilty of criminal offences despite having mental disorders are bouncing from jails to hospitals and homeless shelters, the vicious circle repeating itself the next time they get into trouble with the law.
