OTTAWA — Brushing off residents’ requests for more money for cycling and walking connections and less spending on roads, city council’s transportation committee signed off on its budget for next year, changing not a penny. The committee oversees about $245 million in operating spending and 1,080 city workers, plus $318 million in capital spending, such as for new city vehicles and major road reconstructions. The city is building 55 kilometres of new roads in 2013, plus 10 kilometres of Transitway, the city’s transportation planners reported. And the capital budget includes $2 million for the fine design work on a new pedestrian bridge across the Rideau Canal near Lansdowne Park, the only remotely contentious item on the whole list of projects.
