It’s not often that a councillor has to declare a conflict of interest, so it was somewhat surprising to see two politicians recuse themselves from parts of the budget-approval vote at Wednesday’s council meeting. Councillor Rick Chiarelli walked away from the discussion and vote on the community and social services budget because his daughter works part-time at the Shepherds of Good Hope, which receives money from the city. And later in the meeting, Councillor Maria McRae declared a conflict because a family member works at a company that does work for a company that does business with the city’s IT department.
